Can't Miss Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Sessions for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians
From inclusive conversations to safe spaces - diverse lineup of sessions for a diverse specialty.
In keeping with ASHP’s continued commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), this year’s Midyear Clinical Meeting & Exhibition features programming on topics and perspectives surrounding DEI in the healthcare and pharmacy space. These sessions create opportunities to increase learning and understanding, and most are suitable for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
On Monday, Dec. 5 at 2–3:30 p.m., attend We Can’t Talk About That at Work! How to Foster More Inclusive Conversations and Work Environments. This session will define common terms and strategies for fostering inclusive conversations at work and help attendees create plans to promote inclusive work environments.
On Monday at 3:30–5 p.m., attend Inclusive, Not Elusive: Creating a Safe Space for LGBTQ Patients and Learners. This session, designed for pharmacists, will familiarize attendees with the unique identities that encompass the LGBTQ population and social determinants of health that affect these patients. The session will help preceptors identify tools to plan for, create, and nurture an inclusive and equitable environment for LGBTQ patients — and all pharmacy learners.
Start Tuesday, Dec. 6, from 8 to 9:15 a.m., with Oversimplification of Race in Practice and Education: Dangers, Consequences, and Impacts on Racism in Medicine. The session will review the difference between race, ancestry, and genetics and highlight how the oversimplification of race in clinical practice and education can propagate healthcare disparities. Attendees will study a patient case that illustrates how structural and systemic vulnerabilities can result in healthcare disparities.
From 8 to 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7, attend Strategies for Culturally Effective Care: Diverse and Tailored Health Communication and Patient Education. This session will help attendees identify principles and standards of care related to the use of culturally appropriate patient education materials. Learn how to evaluate examples of patient health education for cultural appropriateness and develop strategies to improve the quality of your educational materials.
On Thursday, Dec. 8 from 8 to 9:30 a.m., attend Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: A Focus on Disability. This session addresses barriers to effective healthcare for people with disabilities and provides a framework for approaching these patients in clinical encounters. Learn how to identify challenges faced by patients with disabilities in healthcare settings and to recommend potential accommodations and solutions for these patients.
Finally, on Thursday, Dec. 8, from 8 to 11 a.m., attend Culture and Cost of Fitting In. This session will help attendees identify their organizations’ in-groups and out-groups and learn about the effects of imposter syndrome. Review real-life examples of in-groups and out-groups and discover meaningful tools and practices to cultivate values that enable everyone to thrive at work.
We hope you’ll make these sessions part of your plan for this year’s Midyear, as our in-person experience is a great opportunity to continue conversations around DEI efforts.
